Moving your employees to Rwanda

As the gateway to East Africa, Rwanda presents an attractive proposition for global organizations looking to expand their operations. The country has made significant strides in recent years, boasting one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, largely propelled by sectors such as technology, agriculture, and tourism.

The political stability of Rwanda is another compelling factor for businesses considering relocation. The government’s commitment to maintaining a conducive business environment is evident in its robust policies, aimed at attracting foreign investment and fostering entrepreneurial initiatives.

Language will not be a barrier in Rwanda, as the most spoken languages are Kinyarwanda, French, and English, with a significant number of the population being multilingual. This linguistic diversity facilitates smoother communication and integration for relocated employees.

Rwanda’s strategic location in the heart of Africa, its membership in the East African Community (EAC), and its progressive business reforms make it an appealing destination for international businesses. The country’s investment in infrastructure and its relentless pursuit of digitization further underscore its readiness to welcome global enterprises.

Key immigration facts about Rwanda

Understanding the immigration procedures of Rwanda is vital for a seamless employee relocation process. All foreign visitors, except nationals of the East African Community (EAC) and a few other countries, are required to obtain valid entry visas to enter Rwanda.

For EAC member countries’ citizens, visitors’ passes are issued at the border post, valid for 72 hours and renewable once. It’s important to note that foreign nationals intending to work in Rwanda must obtain a work permit before starting their employment.

The application for a work permit involves a series of requirements, including an application letter from the employer, notified diploma or degree, original police clearance, the applicant’s CV, a copy of the applicant’s passport, a completed application form, a passport-size color photo, an employment contract, and a fee of RWF100,000 (approximately USD113).

Importantly, the same rates of tax apply to both residents and non-residents.

Taxable income consists of employment income, business profits, and investment income. It is calculated by subtracting the total amount of allowed deductions from the total income for the year.
