Burundi is a landlocked country located in East Africa, bordered by Tanzania, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite being one of the smallest countries on the continent, Burundi has a young and growing population of over 11 million people, making it an attractive market for businesses looking to expand their operations in Africa.
Burundi’s economy is predominantly based on agriculture, with coffee and tea being the country’s main exports. Other key industries include mining, manufacturing, and tourism, with the latter being a growing sector due to the country’s beautiful natural scenery and diverse wildlife.
In recent years, Burundi has made strides towards improving its political stability, with peaceful elections held in 2020 and the government implementing a series of economic reforms aimed at promoting private sector growth. The official languages of Burundi are Kirundi, French, and Swahili, with English also spoken by some business people.
Navigating Burundi’s immigration system can be complex, especially for businesses looking to relocate employees to the country. The government of Burundi offers several visa categories for individuals seeking to enter the country, including Business Visas, Tourist Visas, and Missionary Visas.
Business Visas are intended for individuals who plan to conduct business activities in Burundi, while Tourist Visas are for individuals who plan to visit the country for leisure or recreational purposes. Missionary Visas are for individuals planning to carry out religious activities in the country.
Burundi visas are typically issued for either single or multiple entries, valid for up to 90 days at the discretion of the Embassy of Burundi. It is essential to note that visa requirements and application procedures can change frequently, making it essential for businesses to work with a reputable global mobility partner like Breedj to ensure compliance with all immigration laws and regulations.

The tax system in Burundi is based on a progressive income tax rate, with residents taxed on worldwide income and non-residents taxed only on Burundi-source income. The tax system is administered by the Burundi Revenue Authority (OBR).
An individual’s taxable income includes employment income, business/professional income, and investment income. Capital gains, excluding those derived by a resident individual as part of business income, are classified under a separate schedule and taxed at a rate of 15%. Non-residents are only taxed on capital gains resulting from the sale of shares in a resident company or an interest in a building located in Burundi.
Employment and business income is taxed at progressive rates, with the top rate capped at 30%. Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) is levied on employment income based on a progressive salary scale.

Burundi imposes a value-added tax (VAT) on the sale of goods and services and on imports. The standard VAT rate in Burundi is 18%, with exemptions and zero-rating available for certain types of goods and services.
Some goods and services, such as telephone calls, are no longer subject to VAT or consumption tax. Additionally, a reduced VAT rate of 10% applies to certain imports, including fertilizers, animal feed, and some agricultural inputs.
Businesses operating in Burundi must register for VAT with the Burundi Revenue Authority and file regular VAT returns. Failure to comply with VAT regulations can result in significant penalties and fines.
