According to the World Bank’s latest Ease of Doing Business index, Burundi ranks 167 out of 190 countries, indicating a challenging business environment. This ranking takes into account factors such as starting a business, obtaining construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, obtaining credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts, and resolving insolvency. International organizations looking to establish a presence in Burundi may face several obstacles, including lengthy registration processes, bureaucratic hurdles, and limited access to finance.
With Breedj’s Burundi employer of record solutions, international organizations can overcome these challenges and enjoy the benefits of operating in the country without having to establish their own entity. Our expert team has the knowledge and experience to navigate the local business landscape, ensuring that your operations are compliant with local laws and regulations.
For global companies looking to hire in Burundi, there are two options: setting up their own entity or using an EOR solution. While establishing a local entity may seem like a straightforward approach, it can be a complex and time-consuming process that requires extensive knowledge of local laws and regulations. Companies that choose this route also assume full responsibility for compliance with local labor laws and social security obligations. Failure to adhere to these regulations can result in significant financial penalties and reputational damage.
Using Breedj’s Burundi EOR services is the preferred option for many international organizations. Our EOR solution allows you to hire employees without establishing a local entity, while we take care of all the legal and administrative tasks, including payroll management, tax withholding, and social security contributions. Our team has a thorough understanding of local labor laws, ensuring compliance and minimizing any risks associated with operating in Burundi.
By partnering with Breedj, you can rest assured that your employees are being managed in full compliance with local laws and regulations, allowing you to focus on your core business activities. Choose Breedj as your employer of record partner in Burundi, and take the first step towards a successful and compliant expansion of your business.

Employee probation period: According to Burundian labor laws, the probationary period for an employee cannot exceed 12 months.
Annual leave in Burundi: Employees are entitled to 20 days of paid annual leave (equivalent to one and two-thirds of a day for every month of service) after completing 12 months of continuous service.
Maternity leave in Burundi: Female employees are entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave, with the possibility of extension to 14 weeks. Of this, at least 6 weeks must be taken after the birth.
Paternity leave in Burundi: Male employees are entitled to four days of fully paid paternity leave on the birth of a child.
Sick leave in Burundi: Employees are entitled to a minimum income during the first six months of illness. This income should be at least 45 percent of the minimum wage. Burundian labor laws also allow for a system that guarantees 60 percent of the last wages during the first six months of illness, or even during the first year. Employees must also be entitled to paid sick leave.

Social security contributions are mandatory in Burundi, and it’s essential for employers to understand the contribution rates and caps. The social security contribution is 10% and is split between the employer and the employee. The employer contribution is 6% of the employee’s salary, while the employee’s contribution is 4%. The total contribution is capped at BIF 450,000 per month.
Additionally, there is an additional 3% contribution by the employer, capped at BIF 80,000 per month. This additional contribution goes towards a retirement fund for employees, known as the Pension Fund for Employees (Caisse de Pension des Employes – CAPE). Employers are required to register their employees for social security contributions within 30 days of their employment start date.
At Breedj, we understand the importance of complying with social security regulations in Burundi, and we can help ensure that your business is fully compliant. Our EOR solutions take care of all social security contributions, including registration and filing of social security taxes, ensuring that your employees are fully covered by the social security system.
