Ease of doing business in Mozambique

Mozambique, a country with immense potential and growth opportunities, has been making strides in fostering an environment conducive to international business. According to the World Bank’s latest Ease of Doing Business Index, Mozambique’s rank reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to improving its business climate and attracting foreign investments.

This rank holds significant implications for global organizations looking to expand their operations in Mozambique. A favorable business environment translates to streamlined processes, reduced bureaucratic hurdles, and increased predictability in navigating local regulations. Mozambique’s government has been proactive in implementing reforms that simplify procedures, enhance transparency, and promote a stable legal framework to support international businesses.

It is essential for organizations to remain vigilant about the nuances of the local employment landscape. Despite the improvements, there are still challenges and complexities that international companies must navigate when hiring and managing talent in Mozambique. This is where Breedj’s employer of record (EOR) services become invaluable. Our comprehensive EOR solutions ensure that your business remains compliant with local labor laws and can efficiently adapt to the evolving Mozambican market.

By partnering with Breedj, you gain access to our extensive expertise and local knowledge, allowing your organization to capitalize on the opportunities available in Mozambique’s growing economy.

Hiring in Mozambique

When entering the Mozambican market, global companies have several options for hiring local talent. One approach is to set up their own in-country entity, which can be a time-consuming and complex process. Moreover, managing a separate entity requires thorough understanding and adherence to strict local employment laws, which can be challenging for organizations unfamiliar with Mozambique’s unique legal framework.

Alternatively, companies can choose to leverage Breedj’s Mozambique employer of record (EOR) services. This solution offers numerous advantages over setting up an independent entity. By partnering with Breedj, your organization gains access to our extensive local expertise, ensuring full compliance with Mozambique’s labor laws and regulations. Our EOR solution also expedites the hiring process, allowing you to tap into the local talent pool more rapidly and without the burden of administrative complexities.

Choosing Breedj’s EOR services in Mozambique not only simplifies the hiring process but also mitigates the risks associated with non-compliance. As your Mozambique EOR partner, we manage all aspects of employment and payroll, allowing you to focus on your core business objectives and drive success in the Mozambican market.

Statutory labor laws in Mozambique

Employers hiring in Mozambique must adhere to local labor laws, which specify various requirements and obligations. The following are some of the statutory labor laws that companies should be aware of:

Probation Period: The probation period for mid-level and senior technicians, as well as employees engaged in leadership and management positions, is 180 days. For all other employees, the probation period is 90 days.

Annual Leave: Employees are entitled to paid annual leave, with the amount of leave increasing each year of employment. In the first year, employees are entitled to one day of paid leave per month. In the second year, this increases to two days per month. In the third year and beyond, employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave annually.

Maternity Leave: Female employees are eligible for 60 days of maternity leave, which may begin up to 20 days before the due date. They are also entitled to up to 30 days of explained absences per year, which can be used for hospitalization of a child or other qualifying reasons.

Paternity Leave: Fathers are entitled to one day of paid paternity leave.

Sick Leave: Employees are eligible for up to 15 days of sick leave, or 5 non-consecutive days per quarter. If an employee needs more time off, they must seek approval from the health board. Social security will pay for up to 365 days of continuous sick leave for non-occupational illness or accident.

Social security in Mozambique

Social security contributions in Mozambique are payable monthly on all salaries, wages, regular bonuses, or other regular income, excluding meal subsidies. Employers contribute an amount equal to 4% of monthly salary, while employees contribute 3% of their monthly salary. The employer is responsible for withholding the employees’ contributions.

Foreign employees may apply for exemption from registration with the social security system provided that they are contributing to a similar system in their home country. However, it is essential to verify the applicability of this exemption on a case-by-case basis.

It is worth noting that social security in Mozambique provides some important benefits and protections to employees, such as pensions, disability benefits, and death benefits for surviving dependents. In the case of work-related accidents or illnesses, employees are also entitled to occupational health services and rehabilitation.

By leveraging Breedj’s Mozambique employer of record (EOR) services, your organization can ensure full compliance with social security regulations. We manage all aspects of social security contributions and compliance, including registration, reporting, and payment, on behalf of our clients. Our Mozambique EOR solution offers a streamlined process to manage the complexities of social security and ensures that employees receive their entitlements while mitigating the risks associated with non-compliance.
