Uganda is a landlocked country located in East Africa with a population of over 45 million people. The country’s economy is primarily driven by agriculture, with coffee being the country’s top export. Uganda’s strategic location in the region makes it an attractive destination for international businesses looking to expand their operations.

Uganda has made significant strides in improving its political stability in recent years and is now considered to be one of the most stable countries in the region. The country’s government has implemented various initiatives to support foreign investment, such as offering tax incentives and establishing special economic zones. English is the official language of Uganda, but other widely spoken languages include Luganda, Swahili, and various indigenous languages.

Expanding business operations to Uganda offers several advantages, including access to a growing and educated workforce, a favorable investment climate, and a location that provides easy access to other markets in the region. Additionally, the government of Uganda has implemented various initiatives to support foreign investment, such as offering tax incentives and establishing special economic zones.

Key immigration facts about Uganda

When relocating employees or businesses to Uganda, it’s essential to understand the country’s immigration requirements. Only special passes and work permits allow foreign nationals to undertake employment in Uganda. Temporary work permits, called special passes, are valid for three months and may be extended for up to a maximum of five months. A work permit or entry permit is issued for up to three years and may be renewed every three years.

Work permits in Uganda are divided into seven classes (Classes A through G), with each class having different requirements. Class F permits are issued to practicing professionals such as lawyers and accountants and require the submission of various documents such as qualifications, references or résumés, clearance letter from Interpol or home country, and registration certificate with relevant professional body in Uganda.

Class G permits have two sub-classifications: Class G1 and Class G2. Applicants for Class G1 permits, including missionaries, volunteers, and workers for NGOs, are required to produce various documents, including an appointment letter from the organization, copy of the passport (bio-data page), and recommendation from the National Bureau for NGOs.

Applicants for Class G2 permits, including expatriates, are required to produce several documents, including an appointment letter from the organization, certified copy of qualifications, and income tax clearance for the organization. Foreign nationals may change employers after they have obtained work permits, but they must apply for new work permits under their new employers.
