Hiring in Uganda

For global companies looking to hire employees in Uganda, there are two primary options: establishing their own entity in the country or using an EOR solution. Establishing your own entity in Uganda requires a considerable amount of time, money, and resources. Statutory labor laws in Uganda

In Uganda, there are several statutory labor laws that companies must adhere to when hiring and managing employees. As a global organization looking to expand into the country, it’s essential to be familiar with these regulations to ensure compliance and avoid penalties or legal issues.

One of the most significant aspects of employment law in Uganda is the probation period. The maximum length of the probation period is six months, but it can be extended to one year with the consent of the worker.

Another important aspect is annual leave entitlements. A worker who works weekly for sixteen or more hours is entitled to 21 working days paid annual leave at the rate of seven days for each period of continuous four months of service, on completion of twelve months of continuous service. The time to take annual leave has to be agreed between the parties.

In Uganda, female employees are entitled to maternity leave as a consequence of pregnancy. This leave is for a period of 60 working days, and at least four weeks of the maternity leave shall be for the period after birth or miscarriage. Male employees are entitled to fully paid four working days of paternity leave in a year after the birth of a child or miscarriage of a wife.

According to the Employment Act 2006, a worker who works at least sixteen hours a week is entitled to pay sick leave on completion of one month of service with the employer.

Complying with these statutory labor laws can be complex and challenging, particularly for global organizations that are new to the Ugandan labor market. This is where Breedj’s EOR services in Uganda come in, providing clients with the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are fully compliant with local employment regulations.

Social security in Uganda

In Uganda, both employees and employers are obligated to make contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). An individual in employment is required to make a contribution of 5% of their gross earnings to the NSSF, while employers must make contributions for each employee, amounting to 10% of their gross pay.

The NSSF is a government-run social security program that provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to eligible individuals. Contributions to the NSSF are mandatory for all employees, regardless of their nationality or employment status.

Complying with social security obligations can be complex and time-consuming, particularly for global organizations that are new to the Ugandan market. However, failure to comply with these obligations can result in fines, penalties, or legal issues, which can be costly and damaging to a company’s reputation.

This is where Breedj’s EOR services in Uganda come in, providing clients with the assurance that they are fully compliant with local social security regulations. Our team of experts has a deep understanding of the legal and regulatory landscape in Uganda, ensuring that our clients can focus on their core business objectives without worrying about the administrative details.

This allows you to focus on growing your business in Uganda, without worrying about the legal and administrative details.
