Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa with a population of approximately 20 million people. The country’s economy is largely based on agriculture, mining, and textiles, and it has experienced steady economic growth in recent years. With a stable political environment and a young and growing population, Burkina Faso presents significant opportunities for international businesses seeking to expand their operations into new markets.
The official language of Burkina Faso is French, although many other languages are also spoken throughout the country, including Mooré, Dioula, and Fulfulde. Understanding the local languages and cultural norms is essential for success in Burkina Faso, which is why Breedj offers cultural training programs to help our clients and their employees adapt to the local environment.
In terms of immigration, foreign travelers who wish to enter Burkina Faso are typically divided into three categories when it comes to visas. Visitors from visa-exempt countries can stay in Burkina Faso for up to 90 days without a visa, while nationals who are eligible for a visa on arrival can stay for up to 90 days as well. Visitors who do not fall under either of these categories must go to an embassy or consulate to find a solution. However, foreign nationals who plan to stay in Burkina Faso for an extended time to work for your company will need a long-stay visa and a work permit.
When it comes to immigration and work permits, Burkina Faso has specific requirements that must be followed for foreign nationals who wish to work in the country. To work in Burkina Faso, foreign nationals will need a long-stay visa and a work permit. The long-stay visa allows the individual to remain in the country for an extended period, and the work permit allows them to work legally for an employer in Burkina Faso.
To obtain a long-stay visa, applicants will need to provide a passport that has at least one blank page and six months of validity after their planned entry to Burkina Faso, two passport photographs, and two visa application forms. Additionally, proof of immunization against yellow fever is required. The visas for workers are issued by the Labor Administration and can be granted for the duration of the employment contract, up to a maximum of three years.
It’s important to note that Burkina Faso does not have a business visa, so foreign nationals who plan to visit Burkina Faso for a short period of time for business purposes, such as a conference or training seminar, can do so by obtaining a normal entry visa which allows them to stay for up to 90 days.
The sponsoring employer will need to obtain a work permit for the foreign national, which is also known as a Worker Card. This work permit is required for any foreign nationals who intend to work in Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso’s tax system is based on the principle of territoriality, meaning that residents are taxed on their worldwide income, while non-residents are taxed only on income derived from sources within Burkina Faso. Resident individuals are those who have a permanent home available for their use in Burkina Faso or who are employed by a resident corporation. Non-resident individuals are subject to tax on Burkina Faso-source employment income provided the activities are carried out in Burkina Faso, and the employer is located in the country.
All income, whether it’s from employment or other sources, is pooled and subject to a general income tax called the “unique tax on salaries.” This tax is imposed at progressive rates ranging from 0% to 25% depending on the level of income. In addition to the unique tax on salaries, income earned by individuals from sources other than employment is subject to income tax at rates that range from 10% to 27.5%.
