Botswana is a country with a high literacy rate, according to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. As of 2018, the adult literacy rate in Botswana was 88.5%, indicating a highly educated and capable workforce.
This high literacy rate is a significant advantage for global organizations looking to hire talent in Botswana. It means that companies can expect to find a pool of highly qualified candidates who can meet the demands of various roles and industries. Furthermore, the country has a well-established education system that produces graduates who are well-versed in technology, business, and other industries.
In addition to the high literacy rate, Botswana has a stable political and economic environment that has attracted foreign investors and international organizations. The country’s strategic location also makes it an attractive destination for companies looking to expand their operations in Southern Africa.

Employment laws and regulations in Botswana are essential considerations for global organizations looking to hire talent in the country. At Breedj, we are committed to ensuring compliance with all relevant labor laws and regulations, and we can guide our clients through the intricacies of the employment contract and related obligations.
In Botswana, the probationary period for unskilled employees is up to three months, while skilled employees may serve a probationary period of up to 12 months. During this period, the employer may terminate the employment contract without providing a reason. The employee may also terminate the contract during this period.
In terms of working hours, Botswana’s labor laws stipulate that the workweek is limited to 48 hours, with no more than 9 hours per day for a 5-day week, or 8 hours per day for a 6-day week. Employees are limited to 14 hours of overtime per week and are eligible for 1 1/2 times their normal hourly rate. Work on public holidays or rest time should be paid at twice the normal wage rate.
Employment contracts in Botswana should include the duration of the employment, the position, salary, working hours, and other terms and conditions. The recommended language for drafting employment contracts in Botswana includes clear and concise terms, avoiding ambiguous or unclear language.
At Breedj, we work closely with our clients to ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations in Botswana. Our expertise in local labor laws and regulations can help our clients navigate the complexities of the employment contract and minimize the risk of legal disputes or penalties.

Termination policies are a critical consideration for global organizations looking to hire talent in Botswana. At Breedj, we help our clients understand the relevant termination policies and guide them through the process to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
In Botswana, termination of an employee during the probationary period does not require a reason. Both the employee and the employer may terminate the employment contract. Minimum notice, equivalent to the wage period, must be given or pay in lieu unless the employee was guilty of serious misconduct, in which case no notice is needed.
Managers, administrators, executives, and professional staff are generally entitled to severance after serving 60 months of continuous employment. The payment is equal to the rate of one day’s basic pay for each month served during the first 60 months and two days for each additional month served. However, employees who receive a gratuity or pension at the end of employment are not entitled to the severance benefit.
The notice period for termination in Botswana is as follows: two weeks of notice period for two to five years of service, one month of notice period for five to 10 years of service, and six weeks of notice period for over 10 years of service.
At Breedj, we can help our clients navigate the termination process in Botswana and ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. We can advise our clients on the appropriate notice periods and severance payments and help them minimize the risk of legal disputes or penalties. Our goal is to help our clients manage their workforce effectively and efficiently while maintaining compliance with local labor laws and regulations.
